These plans made up four phase of building work to be carried out over an unspecified period of time. Phase 1 (kitchen and toilets) was completed in 1999 and was the main reason for consulting with an architect. However, it is always worthwhile in such cases to think of the 'big picture' and ensure that whatever is currently being done won't cause problems for the next thing that happens.
Building plans can often cause wide discussion within a church as everyone has an opinion and a feeling of ownership of 'their building' so it is interesting to look back on how changes to the building change the way we use it, flexibility and what can be achieved and then try to measure if it has been time, money and effort well spent.
: [completed 1999]
- Building a kitchen
- Upgrading of ladies toilets
- Remodeling of lobby area
Where the kitchen now stands was a storage area (dumping ground) where the organ was when the church was first built. The moving the kitchen to an underused area at the front of church which was the original position of the Organ.
Not shown on these drawings is the work done in the lobby area outside the toilets and kitchen. What is now known as "The Yellow Room" and is used for some of the children's work, used to be the vestry and there was a small cupboard / changing area for the rector to 'robe up'. This was removed to make more space in the hallway.
The inclusion of storage above the kitchen was essential due to the amount of stuff that gathers in church.
This work was on a very tight schedule and was completed in November 1999, just in time for a major series of evangelism events we had planned (Cornerstone Arts Festival). These events also meant that the kitchen was fully 'tested' very quickly and is still working very well to produce teas and coffees after most services, regular church lunches and catering for Alpha and other ad-hoc events.
: [partially completed 2005]
- Building two new rooms in the back corners (one toilet block)
- Extending the balcony, giving additional seating and two upper rooms
- Re-modeling the entrance way
This hasn't gone ahead fully according to the plans. Something like the corner rooms have been installed (2005) and during this care was taken that ventilation and plumbing for future conversion into toilets was possible.
: [partially completed at various date]
Phase is 3 was all about improving the sanctuary area, it is basically a 'catch all' of various jobs that we knew need done and was defined as a 'phase' to put it into some context. The work included:
- projection screen - we purchased a 'fast fold' model, but are still open to more innovative, creative and ascetically pleasing solutions
- Creating a more privacy for prayer ministry behind the Dais
- Replacing the carpet tiles with something better - Carpet installed 2006
- Lighting - improving the design, usability and maintainability of the lighting in the sanctuary
This was the first time rough drawings were drawn up for partially or fully removing the current/existing hall and building a new hall on the existing footprint of the hall and garden area. Possibly a two story building with staff offices.
